Preparing Your Child for the First Day

The first day at a new school can bring out nerves in both a child and a parent. A little preparation in the weeks before goes a long way toward a calm, confident start.

Talk about school in a positive, matter of fact way in the weeks beforehand. Mention the things your child will enjoy, new friends, new activities, rather than only focusing on rules and routines.

Practice the morning routine ahead of time. Try waking up, getting dressed in the school uniform, and having breakfast on the same schedule you will use on school days, so the actual first morning feels familiar rather than rushed.

If possible, do a practice run of the journey to school, whether that is a drive, a walk, or the school bus, so your child knows roughly what to expect and how long it takes.

Label your child's belongings clearly, bag, lunch box, water bottle, and any items specific to their class, so misplaced items find their way back quickly.

Keep goodbyes brief and warm. A long, anxious goodbye often makes separation harder for a child, while a short, confident one reassures them that this is a normal, safe part of the day.

Ask your child about their day using specific questions rather than a general one. Instead of asking if school was good, try asking who they sat with at lunch or what they did during playtime.

Expect an adjustment period. Some children settle within days, others take a few weeks, and both are completely normal. Stay in touch with your child's teacher during this time so any concerns are caught early.
